What to Consider Before Purchasing Smartphones

Apart from the OS used in a smartphone, there are a number of other practical things to look at when shopping around. For one, if you expect to take your smartphone around the globe with you as you travel, you will likely need to purchase a GSM based device that will work on Cingular or T-Mobile's network. CDMA based devices, such as those used by Verizon and Sprint, offer limited international roaming support, so keep that in mind.
While we are talking about network support, consider what kind of data services are offered by the device. Does it have Bluetooth support for connecting wirelessly with other devices and your PC? Does it have WiFi so you can surf at high-speeds while at home or in the office? What about 3G data? With EV-DO and EDGE data services being offered by some of the networks, what smartphone and network combination you choose will determine how fast you can access email and web pages while you are on the road. Many smartphones come with full QWERTY keyboards or compact QWERTY thumbboards that allow you to type words directly into the phone, some have touch-screens and a stylus for text input. While this can be great for ease of use, it often results in larger and heavier devices. Smartphones that rely on predictive text input on a regular numeric keypad generally maintain a normal phone size and shape, but are not so great for long email composition and such.
There are plenty of other things to consider, too. For example, if you plan on reading a lot of web pages or email messages, you will want a large and high-resolution display to make that experience more comfortable. Some of the larger smartphone devices have displays that are 640 pixels wide and are very practical platforms for mobile computing. Another thing to consider is whether the smartphone in question has a memory card slot, and if it does, what kind of slot does it have and how accessible is it? Does the device have a MP3 player on board? USB v2 connectivity is also something you'll want in a device if you are going to be moving a lot of data back and forth frequently.
Take your time when shopping around. Choosing the right smartphone device requires a bit of soul searching. You have to figure out what functionality you need, what you'd like to have, and what you can do without. These phones are generally expensive, so you don't want to go out and buy a full-featured device that in two weeks feels like a 2 pound brick in your pocket, just as you don't want a great pocketable device that drives you crazy whenever you need to write a real email message.

The BlackBerry 8100 combines a compact keyboard with the legendary BlackBerry connect email program, to give you the ultimate office on the go. With the ability to open word, excel, power point and most other attachments, you can put your email on steroids with the BlackBerry software. The slim design gives you a less than traditional look from typical Blackberry's, but with all the same features and conveniences. The compact keyboard puts 2 letters on each key, which gives excellent accuracy when using predictive text input. Other features such as Bluetooth 2.0, EDGE and a Quad-band GSM antenna make this world phone a winner.

Design
Like the BlackBerry 7105t, the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl is a departure from the form factor of previous BlackBerry devices. This BlackBerry handset is far more phone-like, and RIM's engineers have managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl's handset's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.
The BlackBerry 8100 Pearl sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors-- plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 1.3-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's microSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity.

Calling Features

What is Smartphones?

Perhaps the defining trait of a smartphone is its ability to load new applications. More than just a simple Java based game that you might download from the Internet, smartphone applications are capable of changing the basic way that a phone functions. You might be able to add push-email support to your phone (ala Blackberry), or add a keypad locking app that runs in the background. Most Java apps that run on non-smartphones only work while they are running on the phone's display. A smartphone allows its apps to become part of the phone itself, tying in to the rest of the data on the phone, and potentially connecting to data located elsewhere on the Internet or in your office.
The key to a smartphone is its Operating System, or OS. The OS determines what programs you will be able to run on your phone, what core suite of services are available on the device, and what the user interface (UI) that the phone uses looks and feels like.
There are 3 main operating systems available for smartphones: Symbian OS, PalmOS, and Windows Mobile. Symbian OS devices come in a variety of flavors that each have their own application offerings. PalmOS devices are fully compatible with each other and the many PalmOS PDAs on the market, meaning a wealth of existing applications.
